Effect of changing pH and the Ionic Strength on the Surface Forces in Surfactant-Free Thin Aqueous Films

چکیده

This chapter describes the effect of pH-changes on the surface forces in thin, surfactant-free aqueous films containing a low background concentration of sodium chloride. Despite their exceedingly low surface elasticities, the surfactant-free aqueous films that have an equilibrium thickness about 100 nm are metastable for pH-values between 5 and 10. The extended DLVO theory was used to calculate hydrophobic force constant (K232) from the measured equilibrium film thickness and estimated electrical surface potential. The results suggest that hydrophobic force in surfactant-free foam films is indifferent to pH changes.

Interaction and micellar behavior of aqueous mixtures of surface active ionic liquid and cationic surfactant: experimental and theoretical studies

The interaction between an ionic liquid (1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide or IL) and cationic surfactant (dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)) in aqueous solution has been investigated at various mole fractions and temperature 30 ˚C using experimental and theoretical methods. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of pure components and their binary mixtures, mixed micellar compositi...

Bioinspired lubricating films of cellulose nanofibrils and hyaluronic acid.

The development of materials that combine the excellent mechanical strength of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) with the lubricating properties of hyaluronic acid (HA) is a new, promising approach to cartilage implants not explored so far. A simple, solvent-free method to produce a very lubricating, strong cellulosic material by covalently attaching HA to the surface of CNF films is described in thi...

The Effect of Substrate on Structural and Electrical Properties of Cu3N Thin Film by DC Reactive Magnetron Sputtering

The aim of this paper is to study the effect of substrate on the Cu3N thin films. At first Cu3N thin films are prepared using DC magnetron sputtering system. Then structural properties, surface roughness, and electrical resistance are studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), the atomic force microscope (AFM) and four-point probe techniques respectively. Finally, the results are investigated and c...

Surfactant-Assisted Electrodeposition of CoFe-Barium Hexaferrite Nanocomposite Thin Films

The influences of anionic sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and cationic Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) surfactants on the incorporation and distribution of barium hexaferrite nanoparticles in the electrodeposited CoFe-BaFe12O19 composite thin films were studied. Sulphate bathes with natural pH containing 0 to 2 g/L surfactants were used for electroplating at room temperature. Field emissi...

Origin of the short-range, strong repulsive force between ionic surfactant layers.

We study the electrostatic interaction between two ionic surfactant layers by performing molecular dynamic simulations of salt-free thin water films coated by surfactants (Newton black films). We find a strong exponentially decaying short-range repulsion not explained by classical Poisson-Boltzmann theory. This electrostatic force is shown to be mainly due to the anomalous dielectric response o...
